Social networking isn’t a new concept but one which more than a decade old. Early social network sites included Classmates.com(1995), focusing on ties with former school mates, and SixDegrees.com (1997), focusing on indirect ties.
Recently, I’ve joined Facebook after getting constant invites pestering me to join. The issue with such sites are that your friends need to be on it before it’s worth joining. Where I live, Friendster is probably the most popular social networking service among teenagers. I felt hesitant having to fill up details regarding my profile etc.
Having used it for a couple of days, I can see why Facebook has garnered so much popularity worldwide. An open API for developers to build applications is just brilliant. One can develop applications using HTML and PHP for example, two common web programming languages.
Finally, join me on Friendster, Facebook or Virb. I’ve got everything covered!
